SCATNet™(*)

Technology for communicating with Serial Field Devices using TCP/IP.

Designed as a direct replacement for the outmoded PAPL telecommunications, SCATNet can use both Wired LAN and Secure TCP/IP Wireless communications to communicate between field controller equipment and a remote computer system. When Wireless Communications architecture is used, each field controller establishes a unique secure channel directly to each connected Controlling Computer.

SCATNet is the result of a significant development effort, and has been produced in collaboration with a number of communications technical experts. The communications hardware, together with specially developed software for processing and managing data between the routers and the Remote Controlling Computers, allows for multiple data-path connectivity, and effectively means that each field device can have its own individual channel to the region computer without relying on a critical single path.

Tests with field devices have shown excellent performance, with a typical packet turnaround time of 600mS for even a slow 300 baud communications line, no packet loss, and no overdue message events. This is outperforming other communications devices in many areas. All of our own exhaustive trials have proven to exhibit the utmost reliability with no loss of data.

SCATNet can be used with a host of existing or new technologies, so can be used to provide communications for virtually any control and monitoring application.

Of course, the system is extremely secure, and establishes connectivity through a reliable, protected network with dedicated static IP addresses. Every connection event is crosschecked with a thorough TCP/IP address, Port number and full site ID verification to provide total authentication before connection to the computer communications system occurs. SCATNet could be used for a host of applications, anywhere where remote control, management and monitoring of field equipment is required.

One significant advantage offered is the ability to completely eliminate outdated copper-connected equipment. Wireless is the emerging technology for secure TCP/IP data communications throughout the world, and Advantech Design have embraced that technology.

The SCATNet System consists of the field hardware communications TCP/IP Interface equipment (wired / wireless, or a combination depending on customers requirements) to interface to existing or new field hardware, and also includes the associated central computer system software for running on Regional or Central Computers.

The system can be dynamically configured, and allows new sites to be added at any time, and an included Wireless Modem Personality Generator allows Wireless Modem programming to be effortlessly undertaken by suitably experienced staff, thus allowing maintenance and expansion of the system to occur with ease.

The design also affords users with a choice of multiple data carriers, which may provide both cost and service-level benefits to the end-user.

Advantech Design has more than 30 years experience in the electronics and communications industry and the development of ITS applications both within Australia and for Authorities throughout the world. Our proven track record in leading edge ITS solutions is testimony to our long-term commitment to the industry.
